Myotherapy Modalities

Manual Dry Needling

Dry needling technique uses microscopic hypodermic needles which are inserted into taut bands of muscle or connective tissues that may be contributing to pain and restricted movement. The purpose of MDN is to decrease local/referred pain by targeting trigger points and in turn restoring neuromuscular function. It also has an analgesic response to pain and improves muscle tone.

MET – Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is manual therapy that involves the use of gentle muscle contractions in which the patient activates a specific muscle or group of muscles in a certain direction against a precise resistance provided by the therapist. It aids in relieving muscle spasm, strengthen weak muscles, and restore range of motion. MET is an active technique which also includes passive activation from the client.

Joint Mobilisation

Joint mobilisation techniques focus on attaining a normal range of pain-free joint motion. Nearly every restriction in movement can be regained by a specific joint technique. Gentle oscillations of the joint to improve range of movement and decrease pain can help tightness and limited motion within a joint capsule. Once motion is restored, strength training will be introduced gradually until you are able to resume normal activity.

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient technique used to encourage blood flow to areas to increase healing and reduce muscle tension. A slight vacuum produced within the cups draws the skin up. Cupping can increase the blood circulation to the dysfunction, relieve tension, relax, and stretch tight muscles, promote cell repair, reduce pain and inflammation. There will be marks left on the skin which subside over a few days.

Electrotherapies

This technique uses electrical devices that send electrical impulses across the skin to stimulate the nerves and assist to manage muscle weakness, swelling and mid-acute to chronic pain. Various methods of electrotherapies can be used using TENS (transcutaneous, electrical nerve stimulation) and EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) via transcutaneous (skin) and intramuscular (dry needles). This treatment assists with pain relief, injury rehabilitation and various musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunctions.

Exercise Prescription

Based on the NASM Corrective Exercise continuum of Inhibit, Lengthen, Activate, and Integrate the exercise prescription programs will be a tailored for the individual which helps identify areas required to assist in your rehabilitation. Areas maybe identified in weakness or dysfunction to which an exercise plan is created to help strengthen the area and focus on fixing the movement compensation and to restore functional movement for everyday life.

Stretching

Assisted stretching may be incorporated in your treatment plan increasing flexibility in the muscles which help maintain mobility in joints and reduce stiffness. Several kinds of stretching methods can be used during a treatment to assist muscles. Some clientele that are hyper-mobile, stretching may not be the an ideal modality of treatment to use as they may require strengthening their muscles. Testing will decide the correct treatment for you.

Remedial Massage focuses on areas of restriction and helps correct posture, making it an ideal form of massage for all muscle imbalances and dysfunction.

Soft tissue techniques such as myofascial release, deep tissue massage, and trigger point therapy are some treatments used to help break down restricted tissues and reduce pain.

Sports Massage

Sports massage focuses on muscles relevant to an event. Athletes who train continuously, the goal is to enhance endurance, lessen the chance of injury and shorten the time needed to recover. Sports Massage is a combination of massage and stretching techniques aimed at preventing injuries to muscles, tendons, and ligaments Treatment will be tailored on clients needs. There are different varieties to taping that can be applied and the reason for each will depend on the injury or compromised structure that presents. Using either Kinesio (RockTape) or Rigid Tape your therapist will decide on the best form of taping based on your activity or movement.

Kinesio Tape (RockTape)

With its unique elasticity it causes the skin to form convolutions and wrinkle. This decompresses the tissue immediately below the skin. It is believed that this has three main effects:

  • Fluid effect- improving blood and lymphatic flow in the taped area.
  • Mechanical effect- improving the slide and glide between tissue layers
  • Neurological effect- altering the perception of pain and improving body awareness.
Clinical Rigid Tape

More Rigid in structure, it offers more restricted movement and will assist by being the protective mechanism in the presence of an existing injury. The main purposes of rigid tape:

  • Stabilize or support an injury.
  • Restrict movement of an injured joint
  • Relieve pain by de-loading vulnerable or painful structures
  • Facilitate normal movement, muscle action, or postural patterns.

About Centre Of Gravity Myotherapy

Centre of Gravity (COG) Myotherapy was a dream that formulated in 2015 when Jodie was looking for a career change from administration. Jodie was unsure of what that career entailed, with only the understanding that her passion resided within the health and rehabilitation sector as she wanted to help people heal, free of pain and feel better within their own skin.

Jodie’s kids have all had sports and health related injures through their teens, and it wasn’t until after she took her daughter to see a Myotherapist that she felt an urgency to pursue such a profession in which was her passion and what was now to be her new career. Within two days from this visit Jodie had enrolled into the Diploma Remedial Massage course at MIMT with the full knowledge that this was not the end goal and that Myotherapy was what she wanted to do and become, Graduating in March 2019 with an Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy.

Jodie is located in a beautiful home based clinic offering soft tissue work and full body alignment, assisting in posture correction, muscle rehabilitation, and core strength all of the fundamentals to create and maintain your healthy, functional and optimal body. Jodie is excited to assist you with her knowledge and expertise which just happen to be in the field of her passion.

Jodie looks forward to seeing all of the new and existing clientele in this location.
